Little progress has been made in improving Sierra Leone's roads. The 186-mile narrow-gauge railroad was abandoned in 1971 as uneconomic, although 52 miles of track still run to the closed iron ore mines at Marampa. Having failed in 1987, Sierra Leone's national airline resumed flights û to Paris only û in 1991. The airport is across the estuary from the capital. The only link between the two is a limited ferry service.
